June 17, 2025 Dear St. Mary-St. Columba Family, Two weeks ago when I was on retreat one of the best elements was the silence. We live in a very noisy world, from the moment we are up in the morning to the last minutes of our day we hardly have a second to even hear ourselves think. As damaging as this is to our mental health it's absolutely toxic for our spiritual well-being. God does not speak to our heart with shouting, but whispers. It is the still, small voice that Elijah encountered on Mount Carmel or the flame that spoke to Moses on Sinai from the burning bush. During the retreat, as we quieted our hearts and embraced the silence, we were opening ourselves to the voice of God with the ear of our heart attentive to the voice of the Beloved. Four to five holy hours each day just listening in a posture of receptivity.
Some of you joked with me before I left that they couldn't imagine being silent for several days! Yet I think that when it's actually experienced we see just how beautiful, peaceful and calming it is. Sometimes we need to quiet ourselves, calming the restlessness of our minds to hear the One Who draws us to Himself and assures us that we are loved, that we are His.
